Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics are no strangers to the winner’s circle, and this past year was no exception.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Family Ties from Dark Horse Comics–which continues the arcane adventures of Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and the Occult Cold War storyline in the volatile 1950s–has been chosen as Horror News Network’s Best One-Shot Comic for 2021.
The script–by Hellboy creator Mignola and iZombie co-creator Chris Roberson–is a taut, suspense-filled standalone story. Before they can track down an errant copy of Gustav Strobl’s Witchcraft and Demonology, Hellboy and B.P.R.D. agent Susan Xiang are sidetracked by a housewife’s plea for help. As it turns out, solving the mystery of an unwanted house guest may lead the duo into demonic danger.
“We’ve done some big, sprawling stories in the pages of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. over the years,” Roberson said, “so this time, we wanted to slow things down a little and spend some quality time with a few of our favorite characters.”
The interior artwork and cover by the talented Laurence Campbell blends perfectly with the eerie story, and the coloring by award winner Dave Stewart and the lettering by veteran Clem Robins wraps up everything in a neat bow.
Congratulations to Dark Horse Comics and the creative team behind Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Family Ties for winning the Horror News Network 2021 Best One-Shot of the Year Award.
