Zach Galligan Joins Growing Cast Of ‘Gremlins’ Prequel

All things old are new again.

Zach Galligan–a fan favorite as Billy Peltzer in the Gremlins franchise–will return as a different character in the upcoming HBO Max animated prequel Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, according to a report on Deadline.

The series–scheduled to debut sometime next year–also added George Takei, Sandra Oh, Randall Park and Bowen Yang to the previously announced voice talents of Ming-Na Wen, James Hong, BD Wong and Izaac Wang.

Galligan explained that he isn’t playing Billy this time around because this series is set in 1920s China and “he wasn’t around. So, I’m playing this cool character. It was fun and amazing to work with a new group of creative people who are taking a fresh look at the franchise and expanding the mythology.”

The new series, as explained, travels back to 1920s Shanghai “to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (the future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 film) met the young Mogwai  called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a journey through the Chinese countryside–encountering, and sometime battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.”

The series–produced by Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation– is led by showrunner and executive producer Tze Chun. Brendan Hay also serves as executive producer, with Dan Krall acting as supervising producer.
