First off, this wasn’t just “Insidious” and “Unfriended”, the audience was also treated to the announcement and a clip of “Sinister 2”! This was kept until the end and while their wasn’t much to the clip, it definitely has the same look and had the fans going nuts. Now, back to the panel and the other films keeping Jason Blum busy…
Nelson Greaves’s “Unfriended” is a found-footage movie that is set entirely on a computer screen. Some will love the style, others won’t, but it is definitely taking found footage in a new direction. The entire cast was on hand for the panel: Shelley Hennig, Moses Jacob Storm, Will Peltz, Renee Olstead, Jacob Wysocki, and Courtney Halverson entertained the crowd with tales of often being their own directors of cinematography as they watched themselves on their computers. And interestingly, they did the whole movie in one take to see how it would work. We will see parts of that in the finished product. Definitely something cool to watch out for and the film will look especially cool on your own computers.
The attendees were primarily there to see the latest from “Insidious: Chapter 3.” It was wonderful to see Angus Sampson (Tucker) and Lin Shaye (Elise) on the panel. New to the series is Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott, both ready to take the horror genre by storm. Stefanie is a young woman clearly willing to take a beating for her craft making her the perfect ‘final girl’. Hopefully we will get to see more of her in our favorite genre. Leigh Wannell has written all of the “Insidious” films, but has taken over directing duties on this one from long-time collaborator James Wan. One note from the press room: When asked how he would compare his style to Wan’s, Leigh noted his style is more David Fincher and William Friedkin with muted colors and Wan would be more Dario Argento and bright and primary colors. The clip shown was creepy as hell and the film is highly-anticipated by horror fans.
One additional found-footage film was featured and that was “The Gallows.” The writers and directors of the film, Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff, were there to provide a very cool sneak peak and talk a bit about the film. The Gallows Synopsis: Twenty years after an accident caused the death of the lead actor during a high school play, students at the same small town school resurrect the failed stage production in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy – but ultimately find out that some things are better left alone.
WonderCon Synopsis: Blockbuster producer Jason Blum hosts an inside look at two of his upcoming horror thrillers from Blumhouse Productions. The stars and filmmakers of Universal Pictures’s Unfriended will be present to reveal footage and discuss their film that ushers in a new era of horror. Cast members from the smash Insidious franchise will also be on hand to show never-before-seen footage and reveal details of this June’s Focus Features release Insidious: Chapter 3
