WonderCon 2014 Panel – Godzilla

It is always a thrill to see exclusive clips and features before the release of a film. At this year’s WonderCon, Legendary/Warner Brothers brought out our favorite giant monster, Godzilla! Director Gareth Edwards was on hand to tell us about the film. Edwards briefly compared Godzilla to his previous film, Monsters, and noted that the pros and cons of making a small, intimate film with only two main characters versus a huge ensemble cast tend to be reversed. Edwards noted that his meetings with Legendary were about what “would be really fucking cool,” and not just about money and commercial success. Edwards was also very self-deprecating concerning the film and suggests we all see it before expecting greatness. Regardless, the huge WonderCon crowd was all in! The Arena crowd lost its mind over the exclusive footage. Warning: the roar is different than the iconic roar. Edwards explained somewhat that the roar effect was prepared using high-speed microphones played back in slow-motion to get the sound. Other footage of another monster that Godzilla would fight was also shown. While there has been much discussion on how this film reaches back to the 1954 original, the new monster makes it seem more like the later films. Overall, Godzilla looks like it will be a blockbuster that all horror fans will love!
