The WonderCon panel for “Evil Dead” was filled with fans of the original and their hopes were high for the remake. The multiple warnings from the moderator that what we were about to see was not for children or the squeamish added to the excitement. Some people really did get up and leave at that point. They must have been lost.
As expected, the crowd was thrilled with the introduction of the original Ash, Bruce Campbell, who was looking exceptionally dapper. The rest of the panel participants got a welcome, but not overwhelming reception. The crowd was treated to an exclusive trailer that was Ãœber-violent and probably the most blood I have ever seen in a trailer. When asked, actress Jane Levy said her worst day on the set was being buried alive with a bag on her head and oxygen tubes in her mouth. Bruce said it was wonderful to watch the other actors go through the carnage and suffering that he and his fellow film stars had to deal with so many years ago. He said this in a more Bruce-like way, but you get the idea.
Some very juicy bits of panel gossip: Fede dropped some language about Sam Raimi making “Army of Darkness 2” and the potential to cross over the “Evil Dead” and AOD brands. Bruce said he’d like to see seven movies in total.
And when you think the panel can’t get any better, there is another ‘holy shit’ clip! The crowd of thousands was gasping and squirming. Fede says what is so great about this movie is when you think a scene is over, it’s just getting started. Based on what we saw, I would agree. As someone very against remaking classic movies, I was glad to hear Fede say he was not happy when he first heard of the remake, but when asked to direct he felt that he could do it justice. Based on everything I saw and heard at this panel, I dare say I am sold on the remake (gasp!) and will be rushing out to the theater on April 5 to check it out.
