Big news for fans of the classic EC Comics library as it was announced via a press release that Hivemind will be partnering with the estate of former EC Comics Publisher, William Gaines to produce a Weird Fantasy TV series as well as a feature film based on the life of Gaines.
“The EC library is a timeless literary achievement that deserves to stand alongside the works of Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, and H.P. Lovecraft,” said producer and Hivemind Co-President Dinesh Shamdasani. “WEIRD FANTASY is a truly historic property that shattered many barriers, and our goal is to make the television series just as fearless and forward-thinking as the stories that inspired it.”
Both projects will be produced by Gaines’ daughter and grandson, Cathy Mifsud and Corey Mifsud, for EC, alongside Dinesh Shamdasani, Sean Daniel, Jason F. Brown, and Hunter Gorinson for Hivemind.
EC Comics (then known as Educational Comics) was founded in 1944 by Max Gaines and published titles such as Picture Stories from the Bible and Saddle Romances. In 1947 Gaines passed away in a boating accident and his son William inherited the comics business. The name of the company morphed from Educational Comics to Entertaining Comics as Gaines had a vision that would shake the comics industry to its core.
The new publisher had the idea to publish an unrelenting line of horror, science fiction, crime stories and more. He hired and gave freelance work to industry legends which include Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Johnny Craig, Frank Frazetta, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Graham Ingels, Joe Orlando, and more. Together this band of future industry legends unleashed what would be considered the holy grail of horror and science fiction titles such as Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Fantasy and Weird Science.
