Break out the industrial-sized ant traps.
Them!–the 1954 black-and-white horror-s/f creature feature–is getting a facelift from Warner Bros., with Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino sitting in the director’s chair, according to a report on Deadline.
Horror fans will remember Giacchino as the director of the recent Disney+ Werewolf by Night special, which follows the Marvel Comics character who fights evil using the unique powers (claws and fangs) brought on by a curse from his bloodline.
Giacchino reportedly is in the process of rounding up a writers’ room, with an eye towards starting production in the near future. No casting choices or release possibilities have yet been announced.
In the original Them!–directed by Gordon Douglas from a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes–a large colony of irradiated ants are discovered in the New Mexico desert–and they become real pests of themselves when two queen ants and their consorts escape to establish new nests. What a picnic they could ruin!
Giacchino said the original film “never left my head. What I love about Them! is what it’s called–Them! It’s about the other–the unknown that one refuses or can’t understand.”
The reboot, Giacchino added, will “be about immigration–and to tell a story about the subject through the lens of a science-fiction monster movie.”
