by Thomas Tuna

A classic s/f-horror story from nearly 70 years ago is finally getting a big screen treatment.

Acclaimed Indonesian genre filmmaker Joko Anwar (Impetigore) will direct Fritzchen–an adaptation of the 1953 short story by Charles Beaumont–according to a report on Deadline. This will be Anwar’s English-language debut.

Details on the film’s storyline have not yet been revealed, but the original story–first published in Orbit magazine in 1953 and then reprinted in the Yonder anthology–follows a young boy’s encounter with a strange creature on the beach.

Michael Voyer (The Broodmare) is writing the screenplay, with David Kopple producing the film for Entertainment 360. Village Roadshow is backing the project.

Beaumont was a genre force, writing several episodes of the original The Twilight Zone, as well as the screenplays for The Masque of the Red DeathThe Haunted Palace and The Premature Burial.
