Video Shows The Magic Behind Vecna In ‘Stranger Things 4’

So, you think it’s easy to create a villain?

Vecna–the monstrous villain spotlighted in the current fourth season of the Netflix hit series Stranger Things–is the result of an incredible transformation process, and a timelapse video of the painstaking process was unveiled this week. Check out the video on this page.

The makeup magic–led by Barrie Gower–takes more than six hours to complete, and changes actor Jamie Campbell Bower into the horrifying creature that has been wreaking havoc over the first part of Season 4. Volume 2 of Stranger Things 4–that debuts on Netflix July 1–will, no doubt, bring more confrontations with Vecna.

Gower–who created The Night King for HBO’s Game of Thrones series–said Stranger Things masterminds Matt and Ross Duffer recruited his BGFX team to create a “big, iconic villain” for Season 4. “They decided they wanted their own version of The Night King,” Gower said, “so why not contact the guys who made The Night King?”

Vecna wasn’t the only makeup challenge for Gower on Stranger Things 4. His team also changed Robert Englund (of A Nightmare on Elm Street fame) into Victor Creel. Gower said Englund–famous, of course, for his role as Freddy Krueger–“is an actor who probably had more prosthetics glued to him than anyone else.”
