Upcoming ‘Joker’ Sequel Adds Another To Swelling Cast

The Joker’s next dance card is getting crowded.

Joker: Folie a Deux–the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster from Warner Bros. and DC Films–this week added another player to the deck, according to a report on Deadline.

Catherine Keener (Brand New Cherry Flavor) has signed on to play a “major role” in the film, but no details were forthcoming at this time. Keener joins lead Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga (as Harley Quinn), Zazie Beetz (as Sophie Dumond) and Brendan Gleeson (in an another undisclosed role) in the growing cast.

The sequel–expected to start filming in December–is scheduled to hit theaters Oct. 4, 2024.

The film–from director Todd Phillips (who wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver)–reportedly will have musical elements and will be set in Arkham Asylum, where Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) was left at the conclusion of the first movie.

The original Joker–starring Phoenix, Beetz, Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy–follows failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Fleck, whose descent into insanity leads him to the persona of the Joker. The film–the first R-rated movie to earn more than $1 billion at the box office–earned Phoenix a Best Actor Academy Award.
