Talk about a role a guy like Nicolas Cage can really sink his teeth into…
The upcoming Renfield feature from Universal Pictures–spotlighting the sniveling henchman of Dracula–now has its Vampire Lord. Nicolas Cage–in a unique bit of casting–has been fitted for his tux and cloak and will (no doubt) chew through some scenery in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cage joins the previously announced Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), who will play the titular character. Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) will direct the film from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) that’s based on an original story idea by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead).
Those fans who may well be wondering what sort of a Dracula and Renfield they will see in this flick have only been given small tidbits of the storyline at this point. The film is reportedly “a modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.” Different, to say the least.
In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield is an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions (in between his bouts of bug-eating), but who was actually a servant of Dracula. Renfield has already appeared in Nosferatu (1922) and Dracula (1931).
