The line for the next exorcism starts at the right.

Two genre actors this week joined Oscar winner Russell Crowe in the Screen Gems supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, according to a report on Deadline.

Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep) and Daniel Zovatto (Station Eleven, Don’t Breathe) have signed on for the horror film based on the real-life exploits of Fr. Gabriele Amroth. Details on the new roles have not yet been disclosed.

The film–scheduled for a theatrical release Apr. 7, 2023–is directed by Julius Avery (Overlord) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos (with revisions by Chuck MacLean).

Produced by Doug Belgrad, Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, Jeff Katz and Eddie Siebert, the movie follows the tribulations of Fr. Amroth (Crowe), the renowned Italian priest who reportedly performed more than 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.

The film draws on the priest’s bestselling memoirs–An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories–to relate its chilling tale.
