Variety has a report that Universal Pictures is developing a reboot of Twister with Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) in talks to direct. Plot details are unknown at this time but we can imagine large-scale destruction based on the events of the original film.
Released in 1996, Twister was a blockbuster hit that garnered $495.7 million at the box office. Directed by Jan de Bont, the film boasted an amazing cast which included Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, Lois Smith and Alan Ruck. The story follows two storm chasers on the brink of divorce who must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.
Twister was acclaimed for its impressive special effects, resulting in Oscar nominations for both its sound and visuals.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that there were 1,529 tornadoes in 2019 killing 41 people.
