Todd McFarlane Shares Some Good News About ‘Spawn’ Reboot

by Thomas Tuna

The painful wait for the much-anticipated Spawn remake may (just may) be over sooner rather than later.

Some promising news came from Spawn creator Todd McFarlane this week, who said during an interview that progress on the super-hero/horror film is finally getting “hot and heavy,” according to a report on comicbook.com.

What exactly that means–given that this film has been gestating for the last several years–is unclear, but fans will probably not want to look this gift horse in the mouth.

McFarlane pointed to the recent success of such “dark” films as Venom, Joker and The Batman as his driving beacon. “I think it began with what Venom did,” he said. “He’s sort of an anti-hero, and then it got turbocharged with Joker.”

Now, McFarlane continued, “with The Batman and Moon Knight, we’re seeing there’s a hunger there–that everything doesn’t have to go down to the seven-year-old level.”

McFarlane said he understands the frustrations of the fans. “I know when people don’t get concrete answers and information, that’s not a satisfying answer,” he said. “Dealing on the Hollywood front, there are lots of things going on that have yet to be announced.”

But, he added, “at least we’re all rowing in the same direction now. We’re all pretty focused here and everybody wants the same goal–which is, let’s take this thing to the next level.”

McFarlane is still set as director/producer of the remake of the original 1997 film, with Brian Tucker (Broken City) in place as screenwriter. Jason Blum is also on board as a producer, with Carla Hacken serving as executive producer.

That leaves the cast. Jamie Foxx was reportedly set to play the titular character–with Jeremy Renner portraying Det. Twitch Williams–but with so much time passing since they signed on, all that is in doubt. Stay tuned.

The original Spawn–based on McFarlane’s Image Comics series and directed by Mark A.Z. Dippe from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy–stars Michael Jai White as Al Simmons (aka Spawn). In the comics, Spawn–the murdered Lt. Col. Simmons–was resurrected as the reluctant leader of Hell’s legions.
