The Witches Are Busy Wrapping Things Up On ‘Hocus Pocus 2’

by Thomas Tuna

The Sanderson Sisters are getting themselves pretty for their return.

Hocus Pocus 2–the highly anticipated sequel to the original 1993 spooky film–looks as if it’s a wrap, at least for one of its stars. Bette Midler this week posted a photo of some delectable goodie (decorated with the likenesses of the three witchy sisters) on her Twitter page, gleefully announcing, “That’s a wrap!” Check out the post, courtesy of collider.com, on this page.

Whether this means only Midler has finished her shooting, or the entire film is in the can, is a matter of conjecture. But, it seems apparent the sequel is very near completion.

In Hocus Pocus 2–directed by Anne Fletcher from a screenplay by Jen D’Angelo–Midler will reprise her role as Winifred Sanderson, alongside Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah and Kathy Najimy (fresh off her appearance last fall at the CT HorrorFest) as Mary.

Also starring in the Disney sequel are Whitney Peak as Becca, Lila Buckingham as Cassie, Belissa Escobedo as Izzy and Tony Hale as Salem’s mayor Jefry Traske.

The film–which does not yet have a debut date on Disney+–will weave a story similar to that of the original, with the Sandersons accidentally brought back to modern-day Salem nearly 30 years after someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-Century sisters.

And the three young woman responsible for their return will have to figure out how to stop “the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.”

Fletcher said there is “so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film. I am so grateful to play a part in bringing these witches back to life. This is a movie for everyone–from the fans who grew up with the first film to the next generation of viewers.”

The original Hocus Pocus–directed by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert–follows the witchy Sanderson sisters after they were resurrected on Halloween night in Salem. Despite lukewarm reviews, the film has gone on to become a Halloween staple through the years.
