Spring is a good time for an exorcism.

The Screen Gems horror thriller The Pope’s Exorcist–which recently signed Oscar winner Russell Crowe as its lead–this week landed its release date, according to a report on Deadline.

The film–based on the real-life exploits of Father Gabriele Amorth–will hit theaters Apr. 7, 2023. No other casting choices have yet been announced.

The Pope’s Exorcist–directed by Julius Avery (Overlord) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos (with revisions by Chuck MacLean)–follows the trials and tribulations of Fr. Amorth (Crowe), the far-famed Italian priest who reportedly performed more than 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.

The movie–produced by Doug Belgrad, Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, Jeff Katz and Eddie Siebert–draws on the priest’s bestselling memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.
