Blumhouse is bringing another dollop of horror to the small screen.
The Horror of Dolores Roach–adapted by Blumhouse Television from the popular Gimlet podcast by Aaron Mark–will air exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on a yet-to-be-determined date, with Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) in the lead role, according to a report on Deadline.
The eight-episode series–described as a “Sweeney Todd-inspired tale of eat or be eaten”–also features Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike and K. Todd Freeman.
Mark–who wrote the pilot script–will serve as co-showrunner with Dara Resnik (Home Before Dark). Roxann Dawson directed the pilot.
The storyline follows “Magic Hands” Dolores Roach (Machado) as she’s released from prison after 16 years. She returns to her Washington Heights neighborhood and reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her a place to stay and lets her give massages for cash in the basement.
But things quickly go south, as Roach is driven to extremes to make ends meet. And that includes leaving a string of strangled customers behind in her murderous wake.
Blumhouse Television president Chris McCumber called the series “fresh, bold and completely unique. Audiences will soon see why this modern-day horror story with a darkly humorous twist is so special.”
