This supernatural war adds another player.
The first of three planned sequels to 1973’s horror classic The Exorcist this week added another key member to its cast, according to a report in Variety.
Country music star and actor Jennifer Nettles (Harriet) has joined the previously announced Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Olivia Marcum, Lidya Jewett, Raphael Sbarge and the returning Ellen Burstyn in the feature from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures and Peacock.
All that is known of the sequel’s storyline is that it follows “the father (Odom) of a possessed child who tracks down Chris MacNeil (Burstyn).” A theatrical release is set for Oct. 13.
The film is helmed by David Gordon Green (director of the recent Halloween trilogy), who wrote the screenplay with Scott Teems, Danny McBride and Peter Sattler. The producers include Jason Blum, David Robinson and James Robinson
The original The Exorcist--directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty–follows a desperate mother’s quest to save her 12-year-old daughter from demonic possession through an exorcism.
The film was a critical and box office success–landing Best Picture and Best Actress Oscar nominations and earning more than $440 million globally.
