Modern horror’s ‘King of Pain,’ John F.D. Taff, has been nominated for the 2014 Bram Stoker Award in the category of Superior Achievement in a Fiction Collection for his critically acclaimed volume of emotional horror THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS.
Announced by the Horror Writers Association (HWA), the nomination for the prestigious award is acclaimed author Taff’s first, and it is the second consecutive nomination for a title published by Grey Matter Press in its less than 18-month publishing history.
“Released in 2014, THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS is Taff’s second single-author collection, following more than two decades of work in the horror, thriller and science-fiction genres. Featuring five darkly introspective novellas that explore the painful and emotional horrors of life, love and loss through the ages, THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS has been praised by World Horror Grand Master and Bram Stoker Award-winning author Jack Ketchum as “the best novella collection I’ve read in years.”
“I am honored and humbled by the astounding reviews and word of mouth this book has generated,” said Taff. “This recognition from my peers and the HWA means more to me than words can express.”
“Breathing new life into modern horror, THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS contains stories that explore the universal themes of loss of childhood innocence, the agony of unrequited love, and some of the most profound aspects of human tragedy. Evoking the literary style of genre fiction legends Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe and Bram Stoker, THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS echoes the early work of modern masters Stephen King, Clive Barker, Rod Serling and Ray Bradbury.
“Edited by multiple Bram Stoker Award-nominated R.J. Cavender, Taff’s THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS is published by the Chicago-based press whose editors, Anthony Rivera and Sharon Lawson, received their first Stoker nomination last year for the company’s DARK VISIONS: A Collection of Modern Horror – Volume One that features Taff’s harrowing tale of young adults struggling with sexual confusion, “Show Me.”
“It’s an incredible accomplishment for our independent press to have been recognized two years in a row for titles we’ve published,” said Rivera, publisher at Grey Matter Press. “Producing THE END IN ALL BEGINNINGS with the talents of Taff and Cavender has been a truly inspirational endeavor. As a publisher, I thank each and every member of the HWA for this incredible honor and, as a member of the horror community, for recognizing John and his exceptional work on this groundbreaking collection. We wish him the best of luck as the award process continues.”
Presentation of the 2014 Bram Stoker Awards will be held May 9, 2015 during the annual World Horror Convention (WHC) held this year in Atlanta. For a complete list of nominees on the final ballot, visit the 2014 HWA Stoker Awards website at http://horror.org.
