Joker: Folie a Deux--the sequel to the 2019 box office sensation based on the iconic DC Comics villain–is currently in production for a 2024 debut, and the first image of the film’s love interests–the Joker and Harley Quinn–arrived this week from director Todd Phillips. The follow-up film–helmed by Phillips from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Silver–stars Joaquin Phoenix as the maniacal Joker (reprising his Oscar-winning role) and the multi-talented Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The feature hits theaters Oct. 4, 2024.
The Warner Bros. and DC Films musical entry–reportedly set mostly in the less-than-friendly confines of Arkham Asylum–also stars Harry Lawtey, Jacob Lofland, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson. Plot details are being kept close to the vest at this time.
The original Joker follows failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), whose descent into madness leads him to the persona of the Joker. The film was the first R-rated movie to earn more than $1 billion at the box office.
