Horror Movies Are Secretly Saving Hollywood’s Major Film Studios

What do four of the six highest grossing major film studios of 2016 have in common? They each released a horror film that made enough money to compensate for another big budget box office flop on their roster.

Hollywood accounting is “creative” to say the least, but the general rule of thumb is that a tentpole film needs to earn two times its estimated budget worldwide in order to outweigh production and marketing expenses and begin to make money.

According to Box Office Mojo, Sony’s The Magnificent Seven earned approximately $160.4 million on an estimated budget of $90 million. Ghostbusters (2016) earned approximately $229 million on an estimated budget of $144 million.  read more

Our Thoughts: ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ is exactly what J.J. Abrams said it is – a “spiritual successor” to 2008’s ‘Cloverfield.’ It is not a direct sequel, and the story picks up in a different state where, aside from it taking place in the same universe, the only obvious direct tie to the other film is the location name, which includes the word ‘Cloverfield.’ read more

New ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Trailer

The first official trailer for ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ aired tonight during Super Bowl 50.  An official plot is yet to be released.  J.J. Abrams is producing the film, which stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. Last month a teaser trailer for the film was released.  Dan Trachtenberg is directing the film, which has a screenplay by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.    ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ hits theaters March 11. You can view the new trailer below.  read more
