Synopsis For ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Teases Magic, Madness

It looks like the Master of the Mystic Arts is in it up to his neck this time.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness–the much-discussed sequel to the 2016 Marvel hit–is shaping up to be a real horror/sorcery adventure tale. And a new, more complete synopsis–translated from the Disney Japan website–now afford fans their best peek yet into the upcoming film, according to a report on movieweb.com.

The sequel–headed to theaters May 6, 2022–starts, according to  the synopsis, when “the door to the Multiverse–full of mystery and madness–opens.” It seems that the Avengers–having lost both Captain America and Iron Man in AvengersEndgame–call upon Doctor Strange to play a more active role in their adventures.

But, with Strange opening a door into the dangerous Multiverse (as seen in the recent SpiderMan blockbuster), all kinds of hell have broken loose, and the sorcerer must solicit help from Wong and the Scarlet Witch “to restore a world where everything is changing.”

Unfortunately, “a terrible threat looming over humanity and the entire universe” cannot be defeated by their power alone. “Even more surprising, the greatest threat looks exactly like Doctor Strange.”

Director Sam Raimi, the synopsis continues, has crafted “overwhelming scale and an unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space.”

The movie–helmed by horror icon Raimi and written by Michael Waldron (Loki)–stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo and Xochiti Gomez as America Chavez.

Waldron is on record as saying the sequel has a “spookiness” about it, explaining that the film has been guided in a “scarier direction–just because Sam does that so well.”

The Marvel Comics character of Doctor Strange–created by the legendary writer/artist team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko–made his first appearance in Strange Tales No110 in 1963.
