Summoning spirits should not be left to amateurs.

A remake of the 1986 horror feature Witchboard will start shooting in May in Montreal and New Orleans, and a Stranger Things star has been cast in the lead, according to a report on Deadline.

Jamie Campbell Bower–best known as the villainous Vecna in the Netflix hit series–will star in the new film from director Chuck Russell, who also wrote the screenplay with Greg McKay. Russell’s genre background includes helming the remake of The Blob and Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors.

The remake–which does not yet have a release window–follows Emily, her fiance and some friends as they open up a cafe in New Orleans’ French Quarter. But “a darkness descends over Emily when she discovers an ancient pendulum board–one used to summon spirits,” according to the synopsis.

Her fiance seeks help for Emily from occult expert Alexander Babtiste, “who has secrets of his own–knowing the fateful bloodlines that bind them all to the Witchboard. A modern coven of White Witches and a masked ball at Babtiste’s mansion are part of a dangerous game that puts Emily’s very soul at risk.”

The film–with Eric Schiermeyer, Sarah Buxton, John Paul Isham and Walter Josten as executive producers–continues to flesh out the cast.
