Steve Niles Returns to ‘Criminal Macabre’ in December

by Nick Banks
Steve Niles returns to his original hard-boiled, paranormal detective Cal McDonald this December with Dark Horse Comics The Big Bleed mini-series.  Niles will be joined by emerging artist Gyula Németh and letterer Nate Piekos for the latest chapter in the Cal McDonald mystery series.

According to the official press release, Criminal Macabre: The Big Bleed Out “…starts when supernatural detective Cal McDonald, found wandering the streets as a disheveled vagrant, is ripped from his self-imposed retirement to resume his monster-killing career.  But Cal is reluctant to return to the fray.  What has the hard-bitten investigator so shaken?  It’s a long story that begins with a beautiful woman who happens to be a vampire…and ends with a bang.”

Niles is excited to return to the character, and he has “… been writing Cal McDonald since I was in my 20’s and to this day he is the most fun to write. I couldn’t be happier to see him come back with Gyula Nemeth doing the art.  I think fans of Cal will be pleasantly surprised and hopefully a little horrified.”

Cal McDonald made his comics debut in 1990 in Fly in My Eye: Daughters of Fly In My Eye from Arcane Comix.  Niles character received wider exposure in his next adventure called “Hairball”, which was serialized in Dark Horse Presents #102-105 in 1996.  Many series followed, including two novels outside of the comic book medium.  McDonald last appeared in Dark Horse’s The Third Child mini-series in 2014.

Criminal Macabre: The Big Bleed Out #1 (of four) goes on sale December 11, 2019, at finer comic shops everywhere.
