Collectors can go ape over this beauty.
Star Ace Toys will unleash a Mighty Joe Young statue–based on the animation wizardry of Ray Harryhausen in the classic 1949 film–during the second quarter of next year. Check out the photos of the collectible–courtesy of Toyark–on this page.
The 13-inch-tall statue depicts the great ape battling an attacking lion–with a deluxe version adding two more lions. Joe is cast in soft vinyl; the lions in polyresin.
The regular version is priced at $288.99, while the deluxe display will cost $384.99. Both versions were sculpted by the artisans at Kaibutsuya, and each piece is carefully hand-painted.
Mighty Joe Young–directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack from a screenplay by Ruth Rose–was produced by Merian C. Cooper, part of the team responsible for 1933’s King Kong. The animation effects were handled by Harryhausen, Pete Peterson and Marcel Delgado.
The film follows a young woman, Jill Young, living on her father’s ranch in Africa, who has raised a large gorilla from infancy. Years later, she brings Joe to Hollywood, “seeking her fortune in order to save the family homestead,” according to the synopsis.
