Spinoff Of ‘The Walking Dead’ To Start Filming In January

Rick Grimes and Michonne will be busy as the calendar turns to 2023.

Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira are ready to get to work reprising their characters from AMC ‘s The Walking Dead in a new miniseries that starts filming in January, according to a report on SELF.

The new six-episode spinoff–with Gurira and Lincoln on board as executive producers–will be led by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, and will offer up “an epic love story tale,” according to Gurira.

The as-yet-untitled series will follow Michonne and Grimes after their departures from the flagship series in 2020 and 2018, respectively. Gurira–a co-creator of the new show–calls the new project a “prestige miniseries.”

The series, according to the synopsis, will deal with Grimes and Michonne being thrown “into another world, built on a war against the dead. And, ultimately, a war against the living.”

The questions posed by the spinoff are myriad: Are the characters enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Are they even alive–or are they, too, the walking dead?

Lincoln said “it’s fitting that I finally get to complete the story with Danai and the rest of the TWD family.” Gurira called the opportunity “just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”
