Sony Looking To Develop Sequel To ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’

There will always be demons to battle.

The Pope’s Exorcist–the supernatural thriller that’s been enjoying a successful theatrical run on an economical budget for the last two weeks–seems to be headed the way of so many horror films: Sequel City.

Sony Pictures is in the early stages of developing a follow-up to the Russell Crowe-led film, according to several published reports. No details are available at this time, but Crowe reportedly will reprise his lead role as Fr. Gabriele Amorth.

The R-rated horror pic–directed by Julius Avery–is based on the real-life exorcisms of Fr. Amorth, the famous Italian priest who reportedly performed more than 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.

The priest’s bestselling memoirs–An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories–inspired the screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos.
