Now that’s a reason to smile.
Horror continues to dominate the box office this year–with Halloween Ends less than two weeks away now–as Smile enjoyed a strong opening weekend, leading the pack with a $22-million haul, according to a report on Deadline.
Smile–from writer/director Parker Finn (adapted from his short film Laura Hasn’t Slept)–began with an $8-million take on Friday (including $2 million from previews) and continued strong through the weekend. The R-rated thriller cost a reported $17 million to make.
In the feature, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) experiences “frightening occurrences that she can’t explain after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient,” according to the synopsis.
As things get worse, Cotter must confront “her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”
Smile also stars genre veterans Jesse T. Usher (The Boys), Kal Penn (The Ashram), Rob Morgan (Stranger Things), Kyle Gallner (this year’s Scream) and Caitlin Stasey (Fear, Inc.).
