‘Sharksploitation’ Documentary Set For July Shudder Debut

by Thomas Tuna

For those still afraid to go into the water…

The shark sub-genre of horror continues on Shudder next month with Sharksploitation, a new documentary from director Stephen Scarlata.

The doc–slated for Shudder July 21–draws its inspiration (and very existence) from Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic Jaws, of course, and will explore “the weird, wild cinematic legacy of sharks on film and the world’s undying fascination,” according to the brief synopsis.

Scarlata said Jaws “had a massive impact on me becoming a filmmaker, and it began my lifelong fascination with sharks. This documentary is the ultimate love letter to the shark movie genre and to the filmmakers who work hard to make these films.”

The film includes interviews with such luminaries as Roger Corman (producer of Sharktopus and Dinoshark), Joe Dante (Piranha), Jaws 1-3 screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down).
