Horror fans only have to wait a few more days for the first installment in Netflix’ three-part adaptation of R.L. Stine’s acclaimed Fear Street YA series–and a newly dropped trailer sets the frightening stage.
Fear Street Part One: 1994–which will start streaming this Friday, July 2–follows teenage friends who encounter an ancient evil responsible for a string of brutal murders that have plagued their town of Shadyside for more than three centuries, according to collider.com. Check out the trailer on this page to see for yourself.
This R-rated film–the first part of a terror trilogy on Netflix–is based on Stine’s novels that began back in 1989. Part Two: 1978 will air July 9, with Part Three: 1666 starting July 16. Stine said his readers know the book series is rated PG, “but the movies are rated R. That means a lot more thrills and a lot more terror.”
The cast for this first part of the movie trilogy includes Kiana Madeira, Ashley Zukerman, Gillian Jacobs, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald, Jordana Spiro, Jordyn DiNatale, Maya Hawke and Darrell Britt-Gibson.
Director Leigh Janiak said she tapped into several horror classics while filming the Fear Street trilogy. “I was so excited to pay homage to some of the great eras of horror movies,” she said. “For 1994, Scream stood above the rest. Then for 1978, I got to look at the heyday of slasher films–Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street. For 1666, I found the best inspiration in Terence Malick’s The New World.”
