Russell Crowe–an Oscar winner for his lead role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator–will headline the Screen Gems supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, according to a report on Deadline.

The film–directed by Julius Avery (Overlord) and written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (with revisions by Chuck MacLean)–follows the exploits of Fr. Gabriele Amorth (Crowe), the famous Italian priest who passed away in 2016, but who reportedly performed more than 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. The movie draws on the priest’s bestselling memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.

The film–produced by Doug Belgrad, Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, Jeff Katz and Eddie Siebert–does not yet have an announced production schedule or release window.
