A brand-new–and bizarre–take on the Count and his favorite lackey is only a year away from a theater near you.
Renfield–the Universal Pictures feature that finally puts the spotlight on Dracula’s toady–has wrapped production and will be released (or will it escape?) April 14, 2023. Check out the Twitter post and photo from the studio that shows star Nicholas Hoult, director Chris McKay and Awkwafina–courtesy of collider.com–on this page.

The horror-comedy Renfield–helmed by McKay from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (based on a story idea by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame)–is described as a “modern monster tale.” The movie that follows Renfield–“the loyal, but tortured, aide of Dracula–who has been forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding,” according to the logline. Nice work if you can get it.
But now (ingrate that he is), Renfield wants to find a life “outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his co-dependency.” Aye, there’s the rub.
In addition to Hoult and Awkwafina, the film stars Nicolas Cage as Dracula, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and James Moses Black.
