‘Renfield’ Expands Cast, Gives Some Insight Into Other Roles

by Thomas Tuna

This will not be your grandfather’s R.M. Renfield.

The Universal Pictures feature that places the spotlight on the (up until now) sniveling and strange lackey of Dracula has added another member to its growing cast, according to a report on collider.com.

Adrian Martinez–with big screen (Focus) and small screen (Stumptown) credits on his resume–this week signed on for the horror/comedy Renfield in the role of a traffic cop named Chris, who is partnered with Rebecca Quincy, played by Awkwafina.

Until now, Awkwafina’s role in the upcoming film was not defined, but recent reports describe her Rebecca character as a romantic interest for Renfield. Rebecca reportedly has a “constant temper and comical hatred for the world” that attracts Renfield and makes him fall for her.

As for the rest of the rest, Nicholas Hoult stars as the titular Renfield, Nicolas Cage plays Dracula and Ben Schwartz will portray a mobster. The film–expected to start shooting soon in New Orleans–does not yet have a release date.

Renfield–directed by Chris McKay from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (based on a story idea from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman)–has been described as a “modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.” And somehow inspired by a character steeped in horror lore. Hmmm…

R.M. Renfield first appeared in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula as a deranged asylum patient who is obsessed with blood and dining on insects. He becomes Dracula’a toady, hoping the master will grant him eternal life. Good luck with that.
