Raimi, Alvarez, and Sayagues Announce Sequel to Don’t Breathe

At a press event designed to promote the blu-ray release of this past summer’s sleeper hit Don’t Breathe, the trio of filmmakers responsible for the film’s success announced that a sequel is already in the works.

Eric Eisenberg of Cinemablend covered the event and asked director Fede Alvarez about the status of the sequel, and Alvarez responded saying,”Don’t Breathe 2 is something we definitely want to do. The challenge obviously is — we just don’t want to do the same movie again, slap a “2” on it. We’ll feel so embarrassed if we do that. Our first reaction when they told us, ‘Do you want to do it?’ was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That’s Hollywood! That’s the devil! We don’t want to make a sequel just because we can.’ But then we got an idea that we’re really excited about, and I won’t tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing.”dontbreathe

Producer Sam Raimi gleefully followed up on Alvarez’s statement by stating “It’s only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!” Raimi also went out of his way to confirm that the sequel will stay true to the roots of the first film, but take the concept in a completely different direction and that the studio may have issues with the direction saying, “I don’t think they’re going to like it at all! They’re going to freak out when they find out that’s what you’re thinking.”

It is unclear who will be directing the sequel, but Alvarez has not ruled out the possibility of returning to helm the picture. Writer Rodo Sayagues will return to co-write the script with Alvarez.

No timetable was announced for the sequel, but keep tuned to the Horror News Network for frequent updates on this sequel.
