R.L. Stine’s ‘Just Beyond’ Heading To Disney+ In 2021

The man behind the Goosebumps legacy is at it again, this time teaming with Disney to bring new characters and stories to life on the small screen.

R.L. Stine’s YA horror/comedy graphic novel series, Just Beyond, will be adapted into an eight-episode anthology on Disney+, according to Variety.

The series–slated for a fall 2021 debut–will be scripted by Seth Grahame-Smith, who has a solid background in horror, having written Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Grahame-Smith, who also has such films as Dark Shadows and The Saint on his resume, expressed excitement over tackling the new project. “I grew up watching Twilight Zone reruns and the original Amazing Stories with my parents.

“I’ve always wanted to make an anthology series that families could enjoy together,” he said, “and do it in a way that delivered for kids and adults alike.”

The screenwriter is confident that the combination of Stine and Disney will spell success. “R.L. Stine has been a part of millions of children,” he said, “and Disney has already proven itself as a place that knows how to make high-quality shows for the whole family. I couldn’t be more excited to be working with both of them.”

The graphic novels–which will be the springboards for the TV anthology–are written by Stine and illustrated by Kelly and Nichole Matthews.

Stine, who shared Grahame-Smith’s enthusiasm, said that “back in the day, we had a ‘Goosebumps HorrorLand’ attraction at Walt Disney World. It was one of the thrills of my life.”

He added that he is “thrilled to be back with Disney for this TV series based on my graphic novels. Writing Just Beyond for BOOM! Studios has been a joy from the beginning, and I’m so happy to have Seth Grahame-Smith bring the series to life on Disney.”

A writers’ room is being put together for the show, which is produced by 20th Century Fox, part of Disney Television Studios.

Grahame-Smith, Stine, David Katzenberg, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie will serve as executive producers of the series.
