Did you love R.L. Stine’s five-part Man-Thing graphic novel series? If so, I’ve got good news for you: the iconic Goosebumps and Fear Street author will be returning to the world of graphic novels in 2019!
The Hollywood Reporter just shared a press release from Boom! Studios which states that Stine will produce four original supernatural and horror graphic novels for the studio, and the first one will come out in the fall of 2019. The works are being described as “middle grade” literature, which means fans can expect the age range of these texts to skew closer to Fear Street than Goosebumps.
Stine expressed his eagerness to work in the graphic novel format in the Boom! Studios press release:
“I’m so lucky to have been able to scare so many generations of kids. Now I feel lucky to be going just beyond Goosebumps to a whole new medium of fright and chilling laughs. I’m hoping that Boom! is the sound of an explosion of fun in a whole new world for me.”
In the same document, Bryce Carlson, Boom! Studios VP of Editorial and Creative Strategy, had this to say:
“As a lifelong fan of R.L. Stine, I couldn’t be more excited to see him scare a whole new generation with a series of original horror graphic novels at Boom! Studios. His work changed my life as a reader and I can’t wait for today’s young readers to share that experience as R.L. Stine takes the graphic novel format and sends everyone just beyond the limits of their imaginations.”
At this time, no other writers or artists have been announced for the project. It’s interesting to note that the press materials state that Stine will “produce” the graphic novels, and not “write” them. He will obviously be a major creative influence on the project, but it will be interesting to see if he brings in other like-minded writers to help flesh out these graphic novels.
Stine fans who can’t wait until 2019 for their next horror feast can look forward to this fall’s Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, which will star Jack Black and hit theaters on October 12th. Stay tuned to Horror News Network for more details on upcoming R.L. Stine projects as soon as they break!
