Some days it’s just not worth getting out of bed…
Woken–a new psychological thriller set in a post-apocalyptic world–is currently shooting in Ireland, according to a report in Variety, and carries a theme that seems to be relevant to the present day.
The feature debut of writer/director Alan Friel, Woken stars Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Maxine Peake (Gwen) in a post-apocalyptic scenario in which their island “provides a safe haven from a pandemic that has decimated Earth,” according to the logline.
The storyline follows Anna (Kellyman), who wakes up one day pregnant and unable to remember who her husband is. Nor does she recognize Helen and Peter, who are supposedly helping her regain her health.
“Disbelief in what she is being told leads to a horrible revelation,” according to the synopsis, “and Anna having to contend with existential issues brought on by mankind’s destruction of the planet.”
One of the film’s producers, Matteo Oddone of Italy’s Propaganda, said he chose the horror genre because “its cinematic language is clear, and the genre has a very attentive and well-defined audience.” Oddone added that his goal is to take the genre “to the highest possible level through innovation with new talent, while also respecting its canons.”
