‘Prey’ Continues In ‘Predator’ Tradition With R Rating

This prey is not gonna go down without a bloody fight.

Prey–the upcoming prequel to the fan-favorite Predator horror-s/f film franchise–will land on Hulu this summer, and the action will be hot and heavy, according to the rating the film has received from the MPAA.

The 20th Century Studios entry–scheduled for a Hulu debut Aug. 5–is rated R for “strong bloody violence,” as reported by movieweb.com. This rating follows suit with the four previous Predator films, and should dispel any fears fans may have had that this would be a “watered-down” Predator installment–since the franchise now falls under the Disney umbrella.

Director Dan Trachtenberg said Disney has been “awesome in receiving the reins of this film and delivering it out into the world–and there was never any mandate from them. It was a 20th Century movie throughout the entire experience.”

Trachtenberg described the film as “a brutal, intense, very R-rated movie. And I’m excited for that to be dispelled–that Disney’s gonna only do ‘Disney things’.”

Prey–helmed by Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) from a screenplay by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan)–is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago and follows a young woman named Naru, who has been raised with the legendary warriors who roam the Great Plains, according to the synopsis.

When danger threatens her camp, “she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks and confronts turns out to be a highly evolved alien Predator with a technically advanced arsenal.” The result is a “vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”

Prey stars Amber Midthunder (Legion) as Naru, along with Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.
