The Apes kingdom is expanding.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes–the upcoming addition to the enduring Apes film franchise–is currently filming in Australia for a May 24, 2024 release date, and a new cast member signed on this week, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dichen Lachman (Jurassic World Dominion) has joined Owen Teague (as the lead primate), Freya Allen, Peter Macon, Eka Darville, Kevin Durand, Travis Jeffery, Neil Sandilands, Sam Wiseman, Lydia Peckham, Ras-Samuel Weld and William H. Macy in the swelling cast.

The new feature is directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner trilogy) from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Patrick Aison (Prey) and Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

In addition, the film–which will serve as a sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes–now has an expanded synopsis. In this storyline, many ape societies “have grown from when Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence.”

Now, one ape leader starts enslaving other groups to find human technology, while another ape begins a journey to find freedom. And a young human woman “becomes key to the latter’s quest–although she has plans of her own.”
