Paul McGuigan to direct Frankenstein

Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox and Davis Entertainment have tapped "Lucky Number Slevin" helmer Paul McGuigan to direct "Frankenstein." "Chronicle" scribe Max Landis penned the script, which originally had Shawn Levy attached to direct. But Levy wanted a big-budget version of the classic monster tale, according to sources close to the project, while Fox wants to keep costs on the project down. The two sides parted ways on the project, and Levy is currently at work on "The Internship" with his Fox-based 21 Laps banner. Observers have described Davis' "Frankenstein" as a revisionist, sci-fi take on Mary Shelley's 19th century novel. Fox and Davis have kept details on the project quiet, no doubt in part because of competition from other Frankenstein-based projects at Ghost House Pictures and RT Features. Landis' version is said to focus on themes of friendship and redemption.
