Horror is often a two-sided coin.
Production is underway on the second season of the HBO Max Spanish genre series 30 Coins, and a new cast member was added this week, according to a report on collider.com.
Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti–well known for his roles in Cinderella Man, 12 Years a Slave and M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water–will play American billionaire Christian Barbrow, described as “the ultimate disruptor,” who leads a “shadowy brotherhood of the world’s most powerful and wealthy people.”
The series–slated to start Season 2 sometime next year–is created and directed by Alex de la Iglesia, who also writes the show with Jorge Guerricaechevarria. The show follows Father Manuel Vergara, an exorcist and ex-convict, who has been exiled to the small Spanish town of Pedraza.
As the priest tries to move on from his past, paranormal phenomena start in the town and he must unravel a mystery related to a coin he owns–a coin that may be one of the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas for betraying Jesus.
The director said the show’s first season–starring Eduard Fernandez, Megan Montaner and Miguel Angel Silvestre–was “the gathering of the storm clouds. The second will be the maelstrom preceding an epic storm.”
The characters, he said, are “involved in a hellish plot–where death and resurrection are two sides of the same coin.”
