Paramount Scoops Up ‘My Animal’ Before Sundance Premiere

by Thomas Tuna

We’re skating on thin ice here.

My Animal–described as a horror-romance–will have its coming-out party at the Sundance Film Festival, and will then be distributed globally by Paramount, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No release window has yet been announced.

The film–from first-time director Jacqueline Castel working from a screenplay by Jae Matthews–is set in a small northern town where Heather (Bobbi Salvor Menuez), “an outcast teenage hockey goalie, falls for the town’s newcomer (Amandla Stenberg), an alluring but tormented figure skater,” according to the synopsis.

As their relationship deepens, Heather’s “growing desires clash with her darkest secret–forcing her to control the animal within.”

Castel said her two leads were “my first choice when we began casting My Animal. The synchronicity of their dual commitment is the kind of magically aligned rarity that a director always dreams of.”
