Who ya gonna call? The Ghosbusters 2020 casting director for a big ‘Thank You’ because The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed stars of the original two Ghostbusters films, Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson, will return for the long-awaited sequel in their respective roles of Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore.
Of the casting announcement, Akroyd said in an interview with The Joe Rogen Experience podcast, “I’m not in the pictures so much anymore. We’ve got the ‘Ghostbusters’ movie that we’re working on now and I will have to be performing in that. Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a new movie called, well, it’s gonna be ‘Ghostbusters,’ the third movie. It will be all, most of the original people and then young stars.”
After the tragic passing of Harold Ramis in 2014, it was uncertain if there would be a direct continuation of the original films that takes place after Ghostbusters II since it would not have all four original members return to save New York City from another catastrophe. However, it appears in the new film at least two will along with other returning stars Sigourney Weaver (Alien) and Annie Potts (Young Sheldon). Other stars who can potentially return are Bill Murray (Groundhog Day) and Rick Moranis (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids), though neither have been officially cast yet.
Set to be directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original films’ director Ivan Reitman, the story will expand on the series mythology for existing fans and new viewers.
Other cast members include Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), McKenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House), Paul Rudd (Marvel’s Ant Man & The Wasp), Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim who have also joined.
More to come soon on Ghosbusters 2020 set for release on July 10, 2020!
