The zombie hordes may be on their last legs–but the undead will make one final charge this summer.

The 11th and final season of AMC’s epic The Walking Dead series will kick off with a special two-part premiere Aug. 22, as reported by comicbook.com, that will lead into an extended 24-episode season that will wrap up in late 2022. Check out the brief teaser on this page to catch a glimpse of how “the epic end begins.”

And just one of the highlights of this “epic end” will be the return of the masked marauders known as the Reapers, as the collective communities try to live as one behind the ruined walls of Alexandria following the Whisperer War.

Season 11 begins with AcheronPart I and Maggie leading the survivors on a potential suicide mission to find supplies when a violent storm forces them into a Walker-filled subway tunnel. AcheronPart II finds Negan and the survivors being faced with no way out, as they shift their motto to “We keep going”. The third episode–Hunted–hints at the return of the Reapers.

The Walking Dead Season 11–led by showrunner Angela Kang, producer Jim Barnes and chief content officer Scott Gimple–stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Cailey Fleming, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. This season also introduces Margot Bingham as Stephanie and Michael James Shaw as Mercer.

The acclaimed series–based on the comic book created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard–was developed for television by Frank Darabont.
