In the “eye-shattering” poster, the titular sorcerer is seen with smaller images of allies and foes–including the Scarlet Witch, Wong, America Chavez and Mordo.
Benedict Cumberbatch–who stars as Dr. Stephen Strange–waxed enthusiastic about the new film during a recent interview. “It’s a big, big movie,” he said. “It’s going to be an absolute riot. There are some very bold ideas and some extraordinary tests for Strange. And some very unexpected conclusions.”
The sequel–which also stars Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez–also unveiled an updated synopsis.
In the film, Strange uses his magic to “manipulate time and space and open the door to a mysterious madness called the Multiverse,” according to the logline. “To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his allies Wong and the Scarlet Witch.”
But a terrible threat looms over humanity that cannot be fought by their power alone. “And, even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange.”
The sequel–directed by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead franchise) from a screenplay by Michael Waldron (Loki)–draws inspiration from the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko back in 1963.
