Must be a role worth going ape over.

Kevin Durand (Locke & Key) has joined the cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the latest entry in the long-running franchise from 20th Century Studios, according to a report on Deadline.

Sources tell Deadline that Durand will play an ape in the feature, and that it’s likely his character will be the villain. The studio has not confirmed that at this time.

This latest Apes entry–slated to start production soon for a projected 2024 release window–also stars Owen Teague as the lead primate–as well as Freya Allan and Peter Macon in undetermined roles.

The new film–directed by Wes Ball (the Maze Runner trilogy) from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison–will be set “many years” after the conclusion of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Details on the storyline have not yet been revealed, but Ball said the film will not be a reboot.

The original 1968 Planet of the Apes gave birth to a successful series that included four sequels and Tim Burton’s 2001 remake. The reboot of the franchise began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011.
