Gone, but certainly not forgotten.
The next Scream–the sixth entry in the classic horror franchise–is now shooting for a theatrical release March 31, 2023, but–as has been reported for some time now–legacy star Neve Campbell will not reprise her Sidney Prescott role.
But her spirit will definitely be on the set, according to another longtime Ghostface adversary.
Melissa Barrera–who will again play Sam Carpenter in Scream 6 (or whatever the title will be)–told US Magazine that things will be different without Campbell around, but the fan-favorite “is present. Sidney is present. Her essence is present in the movie. You just can’t ignore that.”
The entire cast, Barrera said, was “heartbroken about her choice (to not accept the offer made to her). But we totally understand and respect her decision. And, hopefully, if we get to make another one, we can have her back.”
Still, the rest of the cast has a job to do. “It’s hard thinking that we’re making a movie without her,” Barrera added, “but we can’t get too hung up on that. Because we gotta make another movie.”
And, in that movie, Barrera will be joined by returning stars Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega. The film’s newcomers will include Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, Henry Czerny, Samara Weaving and Tony Revolori.
The upcoming film will again be helmed by the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, working from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
The movie will follow “the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” And it appears they’re heading for the big city–Manhattan. The stakes just got a lot higher.
