The horror genre’s popular found-footage format gets another treatment–with a James Wan twist–in an upcoming Netflix series.
Archive 81–with Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) serving as executive producer–will debut on the streamer next Friday, Jan. 14, and the official trailer, courtesy of screenrant.com, can be seen on this page.
The eight-episode first season of the series–based on the horror podcast of the same name–is led by showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Vampire Diaries), with help from podcast creators Daniel Powell and Marc Sollinger.
Paul Harris Boardman (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will handle the scripts, with Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas on board to helm the first four episodes.
Sonnenshine said the series will feature a “unique, visually-textured story” that explores “art, faith and the search for identity” using “forgotten media” and found-footage approaches.
Archive 81–starring Mamoudou Athie, Dina Shihabi, Martin Donovan, Matt McGorry, Julia Chan, Evan Jonigkeit, Gameela Wright, Martin Sola and Ariana Neal–follows archivist Dan Turner as he takes a “mysterious job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994 (and) finds himself reconstructing the work of documentary filmmaker Melody Pendras and her investigation into a dangerous cult.”
