‘Mortal Kombat’ Debuts Today, Reveals Violent Teaser Clip

by Thomas Tuna

The much-hyped Mortal Kombat feature film adaptation hits U.S. theaters (and HBO Max) today, and New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. apparently want to remind fans of the video game franchise that the blood will flow freely in this film.

A 41-second trailer was released this week–through The Game Awards–that shows a messy encounter between Jax Briggs (played by Mehcad Brooks) and the unfortunate Reiko (Nathan Jones), as reported by comicbook.com. The clip–not for the faint-hearted–may be seen below.

And, by all accounts, this brief bit of bloodletting is just the tip of the iceberg for the R-rated Mortal Kombat. Lewis Tan–who plays protagonist Cole Young in the film–can attest to that.

The actor called the violence shown in the movie “pretty gruesome. I accidentally walked into a post-fatality set, and I was like, what happened here? It looked like somebody destroyed a buffet line–but there was no food.”

In Mortal Kombat, MMA fighter Cole Young (Tan) sets out to find the Earth’s best warriors after being hunted by Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim). Upon learning of his heritage, Cole finds refuge with the help of Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), the protector of the Earthrealm.

Cole then trains alongside Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kano (Josh Lawson), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Jax (Brooks) before facing his fiercest enemies from Outworld, led by Emperor Shang Tsung (Chin Han).

Mortal Kombat–based on the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias–is directed by Simon McQuoid (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham. The film is produced by McQuoid, James Wan, Todd Garner and E. Bennett Walsh.
