‘Morbius’ Swoops Back Into Theaters This Weekend

by Thomas Tuna

OK, the obvious question is: Why?

Morbius–the Sony Pictures adaptation of Marvel’s living vampire–debuted on the big screen back in April and didn’t exactly wow critics or fans, but it’s getting a second life this weekend as it returns to more than 1,000 U.S. theaters, according to a report on cbr.com.

A Twitter post from Exhibitor Relations Company–seen on this page–makes the official announcement (tongue firmly planted in cheek) that the film is back in theaters “because you demanded it” and “because only you can move the needle to $73.4 million domestic.”

The latter comment is a reference to the $73.3 million the movie has made so far domestically. Worldwide, Morbius has earned a bit more than $163 million, compared to its budget of $80 million.

By the way, in case you don’t want to venture forth to a theater, Morbius is now available for digital purchase and will release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD June 14.

Morbius–directed by Daniel Espinosa from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless–stars Oscar winner Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, who tries to cure himself from a rare blood disorder, but inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism.
